چکیده

A stochastic model of hierarchical series system type for the bending strength of spruce beams is defined from the anticipation that the bending failure takes place at a cross-section with a defect cluster formed by knots or grain irregularities. The parameters of the model are estimated from measurements of the strengths of a large number of short test pieces cut from the beams such that judgementally each test piece contains only a single defect cluster. The test piece is spliced to stronger wood beam shafts in both ends. Due to the occurrence of a substantial number of splice failures in the total test series of 197 tests a special maximum likelihood estimation procedure is applied to estimate the parameters. Assuming that the estimated parameters are applicable in the series system model for the full uncut beams a theoretical bending strength distribution function is obtained in dependence of number of defect clusters within the span of constant bending moment loading. A strong test of the predictional power of the model is established by experiments with 54 long beams from the same population of beams from which the small test pieces were cut.

Derivation of the Bi-axial Bending, Compression and Shear Strengths of Timber Beams

The derivation is given of the combined bi-axial bending, compression and shear strength of timber beams. As for other materials the elastic–full plastic limit design approach applies, which is known to precisely explain and predict uniaxial bending strength behaviour. The derivation is based on choosing the location of the neutral line. This provides the stress distribution in the beam cross s...

On The Plastic Design Of Timber Beams With A Complex Cross-Section

For the design of steel and concrete structures, most modern international design codes allow the use of plastic stressstrain-diagrams for the analysis of the bending resistance of the cross-section in the ultimate limit state. Curiously, in Europe and most other parts of the world, timber structures are still designed for the ultimate limit state with the old, conservative concept of full elas...

Fire resistance of FRP reinforced glulam beams

Thin laminates made of high-strength pultruded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are increasingly being used to reinforce glue-laminated timber (glulam) beams, creating a new composite glulam (FRP glulam) significantly stronger in bending than a conventional (unreinforced) glulam of equal size. Large timber members have long been recognized for maintaining structural integrity in fires and this p...

Evaluating the Structural Behavior of Turnout Sleepers in the Case of Raising Speed

In this research, the structural behavior of timber and concrete sleepers in a standard railway turnout is evaluated, in the case of raising speed. In approaching this evaluation, current practices in the structural analysis of sleepers are surveyed and then, the sensitivity analysis with ABAQUS software is made based on selected criteria (bending and shear stresses as well as contact pressure)...

Moment-resisting connections in glulam beams

This paper describes an experimental investigation into the use of steel bars bonded into glulam timber beams with epoxy resins in order to provide moment-resisting joints between glulam beams and steel supports. The objective of this research was to provide information about the bending and shear strength of such connections. Past research has investigated the use of steel rods epoxy bonded in...
